TURKEY

14 Day Itinerary
Istanbul / Cappadocia / The Anatolian Plateau and Konya / Turquoise Coast including Aspendos, Perge, Antalya, Fethiye, Gocek, Xanthus and Bodrum / Ephesus / Pergamum
With Tour Director Richard Koegl
October 1-14, 2012

For sheer beauty and ancient history, few places on earth can match TURKEY, a country bridging two continents and where successive waves of Hittites, Lycians, Greeks, Romans, Ottomans and others built and razed fabulous empires. After a thorough exploration of Istanbul, we fly southeast into the surreal rock formations of Cappadocia in Central Anatolia. Cappadocia’s fairy landscapes comprised of soft ‘tufa’ stone have eroded into a wonderland of deep valleys, needle-like towers, and irregular cones. Early Christians carved sanctuaries into the hillsides and painted stunning frescoes, some of which are the most moving expressions of early Christian art in the world. Further south is Konya, the great 11th century Selçuk capital and hometown of Mevlana, the founder of Whirling Dervish Sect. Once on the Mediterranean, we explore the seductive ruins of the successive empires stretching from Antalya to Bodrum, the modern port city where Alexander the Great defeated the Kingdom of Halicarnassus in the 3rd century BC. On the Aegean resort town of Kusadasi we explore magnificently preserved Ephesus, once the second largest city in the Roman Empire, and finally Pergamum, the most important center of culture during the height of the Hellenistic period in the 3rd century BC. All of this exploration pales in comparison to the people we meet along the way: charming, authentic, gracious and fun, it is their resilience and fortitude that makes this very special journey a complete revelation.
